What is IELTS
The IELTS, also known as the International English Language Testing System, is a test that evaluates your listening, reading, writing and speaking English skills. There are two main modules in this course, which are academic and general training.
- Academic Training: For students who want to study at the university level abroad.
- General Training: For work or migration pathways.
Furthermore, more than 12,500 universities and organisations worldwide (UK, Australia, USA, Canada, Europe, etc.) accept IELTS. The British Council’s administration ensures the same globally recognised standards for testing, and they provide support materials and guidance when you register.

When the IELTS exams happen
- The British Council conducts IELTS exams regularly in Sri Lanka, including at their official centre in Colombo (49 Alfred House Gardens).
- Students can choose IELTS Academic, General Training, or IELTS for UKVI.
- The test can be taken on a computer or online (IELTS Online).
- Computer-based test results are usually available within 1–3 days.
- Tests are conducted in morning and afternoon sessions.
- The speaking test may be scheduled before or after the main test day.
- Test dates change every month, so students must check availability.
- Registration and payment must be done directly through the British Council Colombo branch website or portal.
When the PTE Exams happen (Pearson Test of English)
- PTE Academic is conducted throughout the year.
- Students can book exam dates online at approved test centres in Colombo and other cities.
- There is no fixed schedule, as test slots are available many times each month.
- The exam is fully computer-based.
- Results are usually available within 48–120 hours (2–5 days).
- PTE is conducted by Pearson, not the British Council.

12 times. You can take the test more than once a month. However, you can only take the test up to 12 times within a 12-month window.
